Richard (Now Radhaanth Swami) just couldn’t imagine an elderly saint from Vrindavan living in the world capital of Hippie culture, and was amazed to see Srila Prabhupada transform hippies into ‘happies’. The impersonalists know certain truth about God; they think God is a big bright impersonal light. The yogi thinks God is the greatest personality behind the cosmic machinery of this universe. This had a profound impact on him which he could neither understand nor explain. Following Srila Prabhupada’s footsteps, Radhanath Swami also emphasizes on gentle and encouraging speech and little acts of kindness.

Srila Prabhupada accepted Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati as his guru, who said that Real welfare work, is to help everyone re-establish their eternal relationship with God. I was reflecting and tend to agree that we need to focus on the eternal reality-our relationship with God-while doing the needful to address the fleeting problems of this world.

Finally at Vrindavan, in the Samadhi, tomb of a renowned saint named Rupa Goswami, Richard (now Radhanath Swami) underwent an experience which revealed to him that Bhakti-yoga was his path. Radhanath Swami’s sagacious words penetrate my heart, “Love of God is not achieved but awarded. Therefore we need shelter of God and guru, who will award this divine grace upon us.”

Richard (Now Radhanath Swami) once remembered Lord Jesus’ words that unless one becomes like a child in his purity and faith, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Richard prayed to be blessed with such a faith. Radhanath Swami says faith is the most precious gift of God for a spiritual seeker. Therefore we have to long for this faith, we have to beg for this faith, we must pray for this faith and we must do the needful to get this faith.”

Radhanath Swami practices and teaches Bhakti-yoga where the aspiring spiritualist is encouraged to worship a personal God. Both the Bible and the Holy Koran repeatedly refer to God in a personal, humanlike way. Radhanath Swami also learnt the lesson of balance – Being Compassionate to human suffering and staying simultaneously absorbed in a spiritual reality beyond birth and death.

Krishna theology is refreshingly different from the stereotyped understanding of God as a great Lord who metes out justice and awards the faithful on the Day of Judgment. Krishna is the same God as understood in all other theistic traditions, but the sweetness aspect of His personality helps devotees relish the path of Bhakti yoga.
